Assimilation means to be someone who you were not born to be. In other words to be associated with a distinct group than originally.
In the play A Raisin in the Sun, Ruth worries about assimilation a lot more than any other character. Ruth doesn't step up for herself or take any kind of actions that affects her or anyone else's life. She just goes with the flow and lets others put things into place.
By Ruth worrying so much about assimilation, we can easily see this is one of her biggest weaknesses. Ruth will never become her own person if she continues to act how she is through out the play. It is easy for people to do things for you, but it is definitely a lot better to do things for yourself and be a strong independent person, especially if it is the independence of a woman.
In my eyes people assimilate all the time. Sometimes in good ways, but most of the time in bad. I see people all the time who act as if they do not speak nor understand Spanish, although they are of Mexican descent. It is bothersome to see people do this just to fit in. I am not to sure if I have ever done it, but if I have it is not intentionally.
Eric, in Lui's notes of Native Speakers, doesn't believe assimilation is a bad thing. He himself has assimilated with the American culture, because as he grew he started forgetting about his past culture of China.

My family or me?
Sometimes it's easier for one to be selfish than to think of those whom we care for. It's easy to think about yourself, well because you know your necessities. When it comes to the feelings or even thoughts of others, we as normal human beings, are not mindful about it.
People begin to feel left out and sometimes even begin to dislike the person who doesn't give them the time of day, because he or she only thinks about themselves. If one cares about others then he or she will receive the same treatment and care one gives.
In order for others to care about your feelings you need to care for them as well. You can't go through life with no one by your side. That's one of the few things which I believe are impossible.
Family should always be united and come before anything. This generation most of all is in desperate need of family time. I definitely know that I would be no where if it wasn't for the positive attitude my family has towards me. The necessities of my family shall always come before my own necessities.

My American Dream
The typical American Dream consist of happiness and success. All anyone asks for is to be content all through life and to have a life time full of success. Although some peoples American Dreams end up becoming an American nightmare because of their lack of efforts towards succeeding. My American Dream is somewhat alike to the dream of most Americans. For the years that are ahead I would like to concentrate in my studies. It may be difficult now with all that's going on, but I know that in the near future everything I'm doing now will pay off. My desire is to continue studying and graduate from Texas State University with a degree in Law Enforcement and or Criminal Justice. I want a well paying job to be able to support myself as well as to be a strong independent woman. I would like to build a family and give my children everything I didn't have as a younger child. I understand that in order for my American Dream to come true I will have to give it my all and put one hundred percent of my efforts towards my future plans. I am dedicated to make my life work in this way.

My Life
My names is Crysta Garza and I am a Junior at Southwest High School. I am 16 years old, I was born on May 23, 1996. I love my friends and most of all, my family. I am a very talkative girl and most of the time I'm happy. It takes a lot to bring me down, but when I am down it doesn't take much to get my spirit back up and smile all overs again. I have two sisters, Stephanie and the other Elizabeth, they're a very big part of my life. Since they already went through all the situations a teenager does they help me out through everything I go through. My mother is one of my best friends and I don't know what I would do without her. I'm not insecure about myself, I know I have my flaws as well as everyone else, but if I don't love myself then who will? My life is going great right now and with the support of everyone in it, I will get far and I will continue to be content.
